Weightloss Tips

In Daniel Reid’s great book The Tao of Health, Sex & Longevity, there’s a section on foods that ‘kill’ fat.
Reid lists the foods (and juices) to help obesity, which include Carrot juice (possibly the single most cleansing, nourishing of all the veggie juices); a combo of Carrot, beet and cucumber juice, which corrects acidosis by alkalinizing the system; Spinach, which cleanses the lower bowel; and Cabbage juice, which helps with digestion and elimination.
He also mentions “Foods to Avoid: all refined starch and sugar, especially white bread and sweet pastries, overcooked meats; fatty meats; chocolate; pasteurised milk; cooked eggs; alcohol.”
Well, just goes to show. I don’t think fat on meat is a bad thing: in fact I think it can sometimes be good for you. I don’t mind eggs either, since they’re protein, but I do agree that frying food is not as healthy as broiling and steaming.
But generally I think Reid’s suggestions are fantastic, and I recommend getting the book (and no, I don’t get commissions from anyone for punting their stuff
Reid also has a large section on Food Combining, which is – I believe – essential for weight loss and health in general.
But what is Food Combining it? I can’t go into exhaustive detail now, but in essence it’s the claim (and I have demonstrated the truth of it in my own life) that different food types should not be combined.
Don’t mix protein and starch, for example. If you follow this rule, you will find that, amongst others, your digestion will improve remarkably.
For a more detailed explanation, there’s a lot of info out there, but one book I found great was Harvey and Marilyn Diamond’s book Fit For Life. Check it out (and other books too) – and do your digestive system and figure a favor.
Not only will you have less gas and ‘bloat’, but I found you lose weight.
If you want to prove food combining works, try this experiment: eat a pure protein meal, or a pure starch meal. Do NOT mix the protein and starch. See how easily the meal is digested.
Then mix protein and starch in a meal, and note how long it takes to go through, and whether you have gas. I think you’ll conclude that it’s best not to mix!
Other food combining tips: eat fruit alone; eat different types of fruits separately; eat melon as a fruit separately (i.e. not mixed with any other kind of fruit); and drink (unpasteurised) milk by itself, alone.
Follow these tips and I believe you will be on your way to a slimmer, healthier you :-

2009 Jul 29 5Tip #1
To make a delicious low fat mayonnaise simply combine one teaspoon Dijon mustard or one teaspoon satay sauce with low fat yoghurt.
Tip #2
Avoid skipping meals. Eating increases your matabolism, thus skipping meals can ‘trick’ your body into slowing down its metabolism in an attempt to conserve calories during a period it perceives as a situation where limited fuel is available.
Tip #3
Stuffing vegetables such as capsicum and zucchini with tasty fillings of mince chicken, meat or tuna are easy to do and very healthy and low fat.
Tip #4
Pita bread roll ups or wraps with salad fillings, are great for picnics, school lunches or to take to work.
Tip #5
Exerise, exercise, exercise! Exercise increases your metabolism and burning off excess fat. When is the best time to exercise? Our metabolism slows down about 8 hours after we wake up, so 30 minutes of exercise in the evening, before dinner will increase your metabolism for about two to three more hours just when it was starting to slow down. This produces a significant increase in fat burned off, even after the exercise is over.
Tip #6
Adding alfalfa or mung beans to your salad brings in extra iron.
Tip #7
Good cooking and healthy eating begins with learning about nutrition and how to prepare healthy recipes.
Tip #8
Plan the week’s family menus in advance and just purchase those ingredients at a once weekly shopping trip.
Tip #9
Be positive! The more you feel good about yourself the easier and faster it is to lose weight.
Tip #10
Learn how to make over family favourite recipes by cutting out fats, salt and sugar. Substitute non fat yoghurt for cream, stir fry minus oil and use herbs and spices instead of salt for flavour.
Tip #11
Please consult your doctor before beginning an exercise or weight loss program.
Tip #12
Eat slowly and chew each bite completely to decrease your appetite
Tip #13
Eat three small meals and two snacks daily instead of two or three huge meals.
Tip #14
It’s a myth that you need oil to stir fry! Use chicken stock instead and cut down on hidden fat.
Tip #15
There is more fat in a plate of toasted muesli than a plate of bacon and eggs! Purchase non-toasted muesli instead.
Tip #16
Avoid removing the skins of fruits and vegetables – most of the nutrients are concentrated just under the skin.
Tip #17
Hot water with a squeeze of lemon before breakfast get the metabolism going for the day, helps prevent constipation and is excellent for the skin.
Tip #18
The best source of vegetable protein is from soya beans or tofu. All legumes provide some protein, so include lentils, lima beans etc into casseroles and soups.
Tip #19
Find a weight loss "buddy," club, or support group. This will help you stay with your weight loss program.
Tip #20
Though difficult, try not eating 3 hours or more before bed time.
Tip #21
I cut up a whole watermelon and leave it in the fridge to snack on over a few days. it is sweet, juicy, yummy and filling. it really has helped me because when i go to the fridge looking for something when i see the watermelon it stops me having something more calorie laden. having it handy so that it is just as easy to eat as a biscuit or whatever makes the world of difference. eating at night time is my downfall too. i cant just not eat at night so i allow for it in my daily eating. i have those 97%fat free rice crackers and/or fruit or air popped popcorn. for me i just cant not eat at night time. i find i dont sleep very well if i go from dinner time to breakfast without anything. although we do eat dinner very early (around 5.30) because we like to eat with the kids. i think it is best to know your weaknesses and try to work around them. also, i dont think it can be said too many times – drinking water makes all the difference.
Tip #22
Make pasta your fast food choice – you can prepare a pasta meal and salad in 10-12 minutes.
Tip #23
Chilli helps to speed up metabolism – even the milder varieties.
Tip #24
Omelettes can be made just using egg whites! A dramatic reduction in fat.
Tip #25
Limit salt in cooking. Other names for salt include baking soda, baking powder, MSG and soya sauce.
Tip #26
For low fat gravy, drop ice cubes into the baking tray. Fat will stick to the ice cubes and can then be removed.
Tip #27
Chew sugarless gum. It speeds up the digestive system, burning more calories, and sometimes kills a craving.
Tip #28
Drinking hot water as appose to cold water can increase the speed of your metabolism and burn more calories.
Tip #29
Make casseroles the day before use. Refrigerate and skim fat from the top before re heating.
Tip #30
Always eat before you go food shopping and always prepare a shopping list. Only purchase food which relates to your weekly menu plan and don’t be tempted to buy goodies.

2009 Jul 29 9Well you can always throw up after you eat, or simply not eat at all. But if you really don’t want to have an eating disorder diet and exercise is the only way, unless you are way overweight then you can do the surgery thing, but try this…. eat a little more healthy, cut out soda completly and work our large muscle groups before you go to sleep, like your legs or back, this will raise your metabolism and burn fat while you are sleeping.

2009 Jul 29 12If you don’t want to cook something, South Beach Diet makes frozen dinners that you can find in most grocery stores. They make a great meal that aren’t too high in calories but are still filling and tasty! Also, Slimfast shakes are delicious. It is best to eat about 5 small meals a day to keep your metabolism up and will help you loose weight faster. If you are planning on going on a diet, I’ve found the best way is to diet with a partner. Either a friend or a co-worker that diets with you can be very beneficial. You can help each other stay on track and motivate each other if either of you starts to slip. Good luck!

2009 Jul 30 16You like Indian food? Is there one in your area for take out? Beleive me, not only does it taste absolutely better than anything, it is the healthiest and the for sure way to lose weight. You can eat one time and not even be hungry the rest of the day due to the high energy in rice ( dont buy the crap about carbohydrates, it just isnt true) and vegetables as well as the spices they use. Otherwise just eat salads. Green Tea is also suppose to speed up your metabolism and has anti-oxidants. But definitely get into indian food. I even have flown to India last year just to eat!

2009 Jul 30 17I can only tell you what works for me. The best way to loose weight is to eat four times a day, I am not joking.
First never skip breakfast or any meals of the day.
Second stay away from the salad bars; if you like salad, eat lots of greens with vinaigrettes salad dressing.
Third eat only lean meat, and stay away from fast foods.
The other very important thing is not to eat late, if you have to eat pass 9pm eat apple or grapes.
Walk as much as you can, meaning instead of taking the elevator take the stairs.
I also think it is good to drink hot drinks like tea after eating lunch or dinner.
Don’t listen to the stop eating comments!
