2009 Nov 12 1Sadly, exercise doesn’t burn enough calories to lose much weight – two miles on the treadmill equals about half of a Big Mac. But exercise is irreplaceable for a healthy heart, stamina and flexibility. That means a longer and more active lifespan.
The only way to lose weight, get fit and stay that way is the slow way – healthy diet and regular exercise.

2009 Nov 12 2Cardio is your answer for helping to lose fat all over. Your calf muscles won’t get that big, your body carries you all the time anyway so they’re used to it. You might lose some fat in them and get more toned (which looks better anyway). Try to vary your routine if you’re worried about focusing on one area to much, attend a spin class, use an elliptical, and just mix it up.

2009 Nov 13 4There are no exercises that will lose fat from one specific part of the body, so any exercise, along with a proper diet, will lose fat from your entire body. But it does take time. Don’t expect overnight success.

2009 Nov 13 5First off you can NOT target where you loose fat, you can only loose total body fat.
In order you loose total body fat, you must have a calorie deficit, i recommend 20% lower than your BMR.
Then if you do that, any exercise will help, but I have found that interval training give you the largest calorie burn in the shortest amount of time.
Interval example:
warm-up jog (or swim, or boxing, or any other aerobic activity)
1 Minute sprint (90% effort)
3 Minute Run (60% – 75% effort)
2 Minute Rest (walk, coast 10% to 20% effort)
Repeat this 3 times (for beginners)
Then do a 5 minute cool down
This will give you a 25 minute workout which will burn a huge amount of calories and build muscle at the same time. More muscle = higher metabolism and higher fat burn 24/7.
Oh and this business of Women being scared to "get big muscles" i wouldn’t worry about that. Women generally do not have as much testosterone as men, so building muscle is much more difficult and you will not build any muscle if you keep the 20% calorie deficit.

Yogic Diet
This is very important, if you wish to get back into shape and develop a healthy, slim and shapely physique. Let your diet be Yogic and Sattvic (pure, light and predominantly vegetarian). This means plenty of raw foods – salads, sprouts and seasonal fruit – vegetable juices, dried fruits and loads of water.
Avoid potatoes, peas, chick peas, grams, peanuts, all non-veg fare, fried, fatty and spicy foods, junk / fast foods, packaged foodstuffs and confectionary products. Also keep away from milk and milk products such as cheeses and butter. But you may have plenty of diluted buttermilk prepared from skimmed milk. Avoid snacking between meals and, as mentioned before, never skip a meal.
