@strugglingtolosefat: did you seriously even watch the video? this is obviously not a video for you so dont go harping on people who are trying to get in SHAPE. not every fitness video needs to be about the massivly obese becoming rail thin. this video is practical to many who are technically at healthy body levels but really want to sculpt their figures and reach some personal health goals. seriously, get a life and stop waving your own health issues in everyones face

“Needs” as defined here is obviously at the bare minimum. Unless they are an athlete, that low percentage of fat puts the person in bad health. I guess you can survive with that if trapped in a mine or on a desert island, but you won’t be able to do much else than just that: barely survive.

@yelisluc Diet soda is an alternative to getting rid of the calories; however the chemicals within the drinks send signals to your brain that trigger your body to actually retain more fat from things that you eat. If you love soft drinks, I would say drink less, go cold turkey, or like you said drink tea instead (soft drinks do have a decent amt. of calories, but the other main thing is that they contain LOTS of sugar).

Also, eating plenty of fiber curbs the appetite.

@kommisar Yes, the human body NEEDS body fat to function normally, HOWEVER, only 3-4% is necessary for men, 5-7% for women. Everything else is storage and can potentially be lost. You can also go below these necessary body fat levels (i.e. Bruce Lee and women gymnastics frequently do), however health problems occur and can result in death.

@BazookaRapist Most “fitness gurus” are near-obsessive about their workouts and diets. You have to consider HOW MUCH they work out; and since their living is based on how they LOOK, they concentrate very heavily on being “THIN”. That is to say, very low body fat.

Most women (or men) should have no more fear of looking like a fitness guru than they do about being TOO educated and socially ostracized because they start reading a few books! ;-)

    It’s not a realistic fear.

@LastBastionOfTruth I noticed that fitness gurus have like no curves. they tend to get a mans build. kinda gross

So what exactly should I eat to stay healthy.

  14. LastBastionOfTruth

    2010 Nov 06 14

@BazookaRapist But that is the notion I’m always arguing against. This notion that by working out hard, that the curves will just vanish. It anything, working out ADDS to those curves!

Most women seem to have unrealistic notions of how much exercise and DIETING it takes for their muscles to get too big and their curves to vanish. It’s VERY laborious! Usually the curves vanish more as a result of DIET than anything else; working and eating to reduce body fat to unhealthy levels.

@LastBastionOfTruth i have a lean curvy body idk how this is even possible but im working on getting a bit more toned. not too much though cuz i tend to look too skinny if i constantly work out. i still wanna keep my curves, ass, and boobs

@BazookaRapist Yes, it’s nice, but she could use just a bit more muscle. Not a whole lot, but to be ideal, she needs some more.

No, I have a hard time believing your fat percentage has to be that LOW in order for you to have “abs”.

There is fat well below the skin surface, including around internal organs. I don’t know a whole lot about this subject but this is something I have heard and read.

  21. Etalian5tallion

    2010 Nov 06 21

@kommisar I think you mean that high? If so, yes it’s a stretch, but it is all based upon the opinion of ‘abs’, conservatively you would say below 7% for men, below 8% for women probably. 2) What places are you talking about that cannot be reached by an instrument that you yourself use to measure..yourself?

  22. kommisar

    2010 Nov 06 22

Hard for me to say without looking at you, or how you train or diet. Maybe you need to change one thing or another, but I couldn’t say. If you’re really that dedicated then maybe you don’t really need to lose those 10-15 pounds. In other words, your standards could be too high. If you want to look like an athlete, you have to train for one, which is what so many people want to look like but don’t want to put in the effort it requires.

  23. kommisar

    2010 Nov 07 23

I know it has to be low, but I don’t know about 10%. That’s pretty low….

As for calipers, there are places where you can store fat in your body where the calipers can’t reach. Or so I heard.

Yes, I know about the numbers for the minimum amount of fat needed. I believe you’re right in those figures.

  24. Etalian5tallion

    2010 Nov 07 24

@kommisar I am certain about the body fat% and ab comparison; you CANT have six pack abs without having low body fat %; it’s not possible. Calipers are accurate and used to measure different key positions of the body, not just one.

I have abs and about 10-11% body fat also; my statement is towards lean ‘six-pack abs’, men need 10% or lower and women about 13% or lower.

This is relative to the amount of % storage fat needed for the body to function properly (3% for men, 5% for women)

@yt2catv The reason i ask is because i’ve always been pretty athletic but i’ve been trying to slim down by 10-15 pounds but even though i’ll diet and work out hard (always changing my work out routine as well) i can’t seem to slim down anymore, i wonder if this is my limit, if so… this sucks! haha.
